The 133 Cardinal electors who gathered in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel elected the new Pope.
White smoke and bells from the Vatican rooftops signalled the election of a new pope at some minutes after 5pm Nigerian time on Thursday.
It was on the second day and the third election by the Cardinals who were locked in the chapel until the election.
