Governor Umo Bassey Eno of Akwa Ibom State, has formally dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at the official declaration in Uyo, the state capital, Governor Umo Eno affirmed that the decision followed months of broad consultations and was rooted in a commitment to the greater good of the state.
“Fellow Akwa Ibomites, we are gathered here today to witness change—change that comes not from a place of weakness but from strength, under the Ministry of Reconciliation. Our values remain constant, and our commitment to inclusive, bipartisan governance is unwavering.”
He reiterated that his administration would continue to drive development through the ARISE Agenda while fostering closer ties with the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“The removal of fuel subsidy was a difficult but necessary decision. It has empowered states with more resources and reflects the bold leadership of our President, whom we must support in this national renewal effort,” the Governor remarked.
Governor Eno also issued a firm warning to political appointees, emphasizing that disloyalty and divisiveness would not be tolerated. He restated his vision for a united, inclusive Akwa Ibom where governance remains people-focused.
“This signals the rebirth of a new Akwa Ibom. The people are following the Governor to make a common-sense political choice.” he stated .
Setting the tone for the event Director General of Campaigns, Chief Assam Assam SAN said the movement of the Governor marks a new dawn in the political history of the State a presents a common front for the sustainable development of Akwa Ibom.
The symbolic presentation of the APC broom by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, was the highlight of the ceremony.
“What we are witnessing is not just a defection—it is a movement. The people of Akwa Ibom are shifting to the progressive fold, and we welcome you warmly,” Uzodinma said.
The APC State Chairman, Obong Stephen Ntukekpo, was joined by Local Government Chairmen led by Dr. Uwemedimo Udo (Chairman of ALGON and Chairman of Uyo LGA), the State Executive Council led by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, the State House of Assembly led by Speaker Udeme Otong, and Members of the National Assembly led by Senator Ekong Sampson—all reaffirming their support for the Governor’s decision.
In a goodwill message on behalf of the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, his wife, Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, praised the Governor’s courage and foresight:
