As part of activities to commemorate this year’s World Environment Day, Igbinedion University, Okada, is organizing a thought-provoking lecture focused on the global menace of plastic pollution. The one-day event, themed “Ending Plastic Pollution,” is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in the Conference Hall of the University’s main library.
World Environment Day, established in 1972 at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, serves as a global platform to raise awareness and spur action on urgent environmental issues. It encourages individuals, communities, and governments to embrace sustainable practices, conserve natural resources, and confront major threats like climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
The Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Professor Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, Ph.D, FAS, a distinguished scholar in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Forensics, will serve as the chief host. Professor Ezemonye is also the President and Chairman of Council of the Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria (IEPN).
According to the university’s Public Relations Department, the lecture will provide deep insights into the devastating impact of plastic waste on ecosystems and human health, while promoting innovative solutions for reducing plastic use and enhancing environmental protection.
In a statement signed by Deputy Director of Public Relations, Lucky U. Eboh-Onokwe, ANIPR, the University extended an open invitation to the general public to attend the event, which promises to be an enlightening and impactful discourse on one of the world’s most urgent environmental concerns.
“Everyone is invited to this important engagement,” the statement read. “It’s an opportunity to collectively reflect on our environmental responsibilities and be part of the global call to action against plastic pollution.”
