Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has ordered the authorities of the Niger Delta University (NDU) to identify and expel students involved in cult activities if they do not withdraw voluntarily.
Speaking at the 7th combined convocation ceremony of the university, following recent incidents of student cult clashes that reportedly claimed lives in the community, the governor directed the university management to take decisive action against cultism.
“There should be no room for cultism in this university. I have given the Vice Chancellor a charge as the Visitor to this institution. As a government, I have also directed all security agencies in the state to act decisively. Anyone found engaging in cultism in this university should face immediate sanctions,” Governor Diri declared.
The governor had earlier issued a similar directive to security agencies and the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice during the State Executive Council meeting, urging the speedy prosecution of anyone arrested for cult-related crimes.
He added: “Recently, I spoke to the Vice Chancellor about the resurgence of cultism in this university. I use this opportunity to warn those who did not come here for learning and character building to voluntarily withdraw before they are shown the way out.”
