The 2025 National Sports Festival kicked off with a dazzling opening ceremony brimming with color, beauty, and excitement at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the event, while Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun played host to other dignitaries, including Governors Hope Uzodinma (Imo), Charles Soludo (Anambra), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), and Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo).
Spectators were treated to a spectacular showcase of dance, music, calisthenics, and fireworks, making it one of the most impressive opening ceremonies in the festival’s history.
Adding to the grandeur, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, led Team Edo in a historic march past, proudly displaying their striking red and white tracksuits — a symbol of unity and pride from the Heartbeat of the Nation.
Speaking through his Media Officer, Edoko Wilson Edoko, Enabulele highlighted the unwavering support of Governor Monday Okpebholo, who is firmly committed to sports development. “I was asked if there are threats from other highly competitive states, especially from the South-South, and my simple answer is that with the level of preparation by Team Edo athletes, victory at the 22nd National Sports Festival is certain,” he stated confidently.
“The rousing reception we received during our colorful display is a strong indication of the team’s readiness,” he added.
Afrobeat sensation Davido electrified the stadium with a thrilling performance that had the crowd on its feet.
Over 10,000 athletes from all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the IJA team are set to compete in 33 sports, making this edition one of the largest in the festival’s storied history. It is a celebration not just of sporting excellence, but of the resilient spirit of the Nigerian people.
As the games begin, athletes, officials, and fans alike look forward to exciting competitions across multiple venues, including the Alake Sports Centre, MKO Abiola Stadium, Remo Stars Stadium, and other key facilities. The Games Village at Babcock University is poised to provide a comfortable and secure environment for all participants.
