Outgoing Registrar of Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO), Friday Benji Bakare, Esq., marked the end of his five-year tenure with a valedictory lecture titled “The Role of University Administrators in Fostering Discipline in the Workplace: A Practitioner’s Bird’s-Eye View.” The event was held on May 19, 2025.
The lecture served both as a tribute to Vice Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, and a reflection on promoting workplace discipline. Bakare shared his experience transitioning from northern Nigeria and expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the Vice Chancellor.
He highlighted key leadership lessons learned from Professor Ezemonye, including humility, optimism, clairvoyance, and compassion—traits he described as essential for effective leadership.
Quoting philosopher Jim Rohn, Bakare emphasized that discipline is the foundation of success, likening it to the order that governs a solar system. He proposed strategies for fostering discipline, such as implementing clear policies, promoting mentorship, and adopting flexible leadership styles tailored to team dynamics.
Bakare also addressed systemic challenges such as nepotism and weak conflict resolution mechanisms, offering practical advice on upholding integrity and making tough but necessary decisions. He concluded with a heartfelt appreciation to the university community and a reflection on the enduring impact of principled leadership.
The lecture, which received a standing ovation, featured emotional tributes and marked the inaugural edition of IUO’s annual Registry Lecture Series. It reinforced the idea that disciplined, compassionate leadership can transform educational institutions.
