The Edo State Government has directed the immediate suspension of Mr. Uyi Igiebor as Okaighele of his community, while urging adherence to due process in resolving disputes surrounding the appointment of a new youth leader.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir (Dr.) Lucky Eseigbe, during a fact-finding meeting with elders and members of the community. He emphasized the need for the community to follow its laid-down guidelines and procedures in addressing concerns regarding the Okaighele position.
The Commissioner’s decision followed a petition alleging the infiltration of armed thugs disguised as vigilantes, leading to security breaches and mayhem in the community.
The petitioner, Mr. Ikpomwonsa Aigbedo, claimed that certain community elders had reneged on their earlier promise to install him as Okaighele. However, a representative of the Odionwere, Mr. Monday Omozuhionmwen, denied knowledge of any such promise.
Several other community members alleged that the current Okaighele was installed illegally and that his tenure has coincided with rising insecurity in the area.
An elder, Mr. Michael Alohan, appealed for transparency and due process in the selection and installation of both the Okaighele and Edion, describing both positions as critical to peace and stability within the community.
Dr. Eseigbe underscored the importance of truth, accountability, integrity, and fairness. He urged all parties involved to remain honest and transparent as efforts continue to resolve the dispute. He also appealed for peace and unity, affirming that the Ministry, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, is committed to supporting lawful and peaceful processes to promote lasting peace across Edo communities.
While investigations are ongoing, the Commissioner directed that the community reconvene in three weeks for a follow-up meeting to finalize resolutions regarding the Okaighele installation and other related matters.
A community member, Mr. Osamede Edorodion, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for his wisdom and calm approach in handling the sensitive issue. He also extended gratitude to the Executive Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his developmental initiatives and commitment to peace in Edo State.
