The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned to that using Dove Hand Soap (100g) and Dove Deodorant, are now doing so at their own risk.

They say this is because of the decision of the European Union authorities to ban the marketing and sale of the products in Europe citing health risks.

NAFDAC announced that all Dove soaps and deodorants are now banned in Nigeria, stating that the products do not comply with the Cosmetic Products Regulation. They are said to contain 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (BMHCA), a chemical prohibited in cosmetic products.

BMHCA, a synthetic fragrance once commonly used in cosmetics and household products, has been linked to reproductive toxicity and endocrine disruption. Experts warn it can harm the reproductive system, affect the health of unborn children, and may cause skin sensitization.

In addition, the importation of soaps is already prohibited in Nigeria under the restricted and import prohibition list. Soaps and cosmetics are also among the items ineligible for foreign exchange to fund imports.

NAFDAC revealed that these banned products are not listed in its official database. It has, therefore, advised importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to prevent the importation, distribution, sale, or use of the affected products.

Members of the public in possession of the banned items are urged to immediately discontinue their use or sale and submit any stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.

Healthcare professionals and consumers are also encouraged to report any adverse reactions associated with the use of regulated products to the nearest NAFDAC office, via email at pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, or through the E-reporting platforms available at www.nafdac.gov.ng or via the Med Safety App, downloadable on Android and iOS devices.
