Four Japanese soldiers have suffered minor injuries following an explosion at a storage facility inside a US military base located on the southern Island of Okinawa.
The Kyoto News reports that the soldiers had their fingers wounded while they were trying to keep unexploded ordnance from World War II recently found on the island.
Although officials say the injuries were not life threatening, the Self Defence Force’s joint staff said he incident is being investigated.
Reports say there are still hundreds of tons of unexploded wartime bombs buried around Japan and most of them dropped by the U.S. military.
Incidents are common of some of these bombs being dug up at construction sites and elsewhere.
A large crater was created while flights were suspended when in October, an unexploded wartime U.S. bomb exploded at a commercial airport in southern Japan.
