As the world marks the International Day Against Child Labour, the Edo State Government has restated its commitment to implementing initiatives and programmes that cater to the needs of every child in the state.

This assurance was given by the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, in an address to commemorate the day. She emphasized the importance of providing every child with a safe and nurturing environment, free from the burden of child labour.

“Child labour is not just about children working; it is about their innocence being stolen, their childhoods lost, and their futures put at risk. It’s a harsh reality that no child should ever have to endure,” she said, speaking on the unimaginable hardships and dangers faced by millions of children daily.

“Globally, many children suffer terribly. Some are forced into hard labour under harsh conditions, denied education, and robbed of their childhood. Child labour is a serious issue — it perpetuates poverty, stifles development, and violates children’s rights. It is a crime punishable by law,” Mrs. Anani added.

She further stated that Governor Monday Okpebholo is deeply committed to the welfare of every child in Edo State. “This commitment is reflected in the administration’s significant investments in education, healthcare, and other vital sectors. Our administration prioritizes the future of every child, recognizing them as the leaders of tomorrow and striving to create an environment where they can thrive and fulfill their potential.”

Referencing the recent case of Miss Peace, the young Tarok girl who was brutally burned with a hot pressing iron by her employer in Caribbean Estate, Airport Road, Benin City, Mrs. Anani strongly condemned the inhumane treatment and called for justice.

She urged all stakeholders — including government officials, civil society organizations, and individuals — to unite in the fight against child labour.

“Every child deserves a life filled with laughter, love, and joy. They deserve to grow up in an environment free from exploitation. We must ensure they receive the education, care, and love they need to become the leaders and innovators of the future.”

Concluding her remarks, Mrs. Anani said, “I urge everyone to join hands in ending child labour. Together, we can create a world where every child has access to quality education, healthcare, and protection from exploitation. By working collectively, we can build a brighter future for children and give them the childhood they so rightly deserve. Together, we can make Edo State a haven for our children to flourish.”
