Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, has advised that women with multiple previous pregnancies—such as one with 17—should be strongly discouraged from further childbearing, warning that allowing them to continue poses serious health risks.
Dr. Oshiomhole made this assertion over the weekend while emphasizing the crucial role of family planning in reducing maternal mortality and improving public health outcomes.
He stated, “Family planning remains a critical intervention in the efforts of the Edo State Government to reduce maternal mortality, which continues to be a significant public health challenge in Nigeria.”
Citing global data, the Commissioner noted that effective family planning could reduce maternal deaths by up to 30%, adding that “no government can claim real progress without addressing key health indicators like maternal mortality.”
He called on fellow public servants to champion increased investments in reproductive health, stressing his personal commitment to ensuring that the Edo State Governor fully understands and supports expanded funding and policy backing for family planning programs.
“It’s not just a health issue—it’s a matter of social development and economic stability,” he said.
Dr. Oshiomhole further acknowledged the cultural and religious resistance to family planning in many communities, including his own, noting that myths and conspiracy theories often hinder acceptance.
“In addressing barriers to family planning, we must confront religious and cultural sensitivities head-on. It is our responsibility to educate our people and dispel these harmful misconceptions,” he added.
He applauded Governor Monday Okpebholo’s focus on primary healthcare reform, saying the administration is committed to making healthcare more accessible, affordable, and efficient—especially for rural communities.
“Family planning is a key pillar of our social contract with the people, and the Governor is fully committed to fulfilling his campaign promises in that regard,” he noted.
Dr. Oshiomhole concluded by calling for a united front involving traditional rulers, religious leaders, and grassroots mobilizers to shift societal attitudes and drive lasting change.
“With coordinated effort, strong leadership, and community-driven action, we can build a healthier and more empowered Nigeria,” he affirmed.
