All individuals convicted of kidnapping in Ondo State will soon face the death penalty, as part of a renewed commitment to security by the state government, which is forwarding relevant legislation to the House of Assembly for action.
The decision was made during the weekly State Executive Council meeting held in Akure and presided over by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.
The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, said the Council reviewed the worsening cases of kidnapping and cultism across the state, describing them as “serious threats to public peace and safety.”
According to Dr. Ajulo, “The Executive Council has resolved to begin the process of amending relevant laws to strengthen the legal framework, with the inclusion of the death sentence as punishment for convicted kidnappers.”
To improve security, increase nighttime visibility, and upgrade public lighting infrastructure across the state, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, disclosed that the government will provide and install 6,000 standalone solar-powered streetlights across the state’s three senatorial districts.
He stated, “Each senatorial district—Ondo North, Ondo Central, and Ondo South—will receive 2,000 units.”
With these far-reaching decisions, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration continues to demonstrate its resolve to tackle insecurity, enhance infrastructure, improve healthcare delivery, and promote inclusive governance in Ondo State.
