Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has reaffirmed the pivotal role of traditional rulers in grassroots governance, describing them as the custodians of the state’s rich cultural heritage and essential partners in sustaining peace and development.

The governor made this declaration while inaugurating the Chairman and members of the Ondo State Council of Obas at a ceremony in Akure. His comments coincide with the ongoing nationwide Senate public hearings on proposed constitutional amendments to establish national, state, and local government councils of traditional rulers.

Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized that traditional rulers play irreplaceable roles in peacebuilding, community development, cultural preservation, and moral leadership, stating, “Your pedigrees and proven commitments to the welfare of your people stand you all in good stead for this critical role.”

He outlined the statutory functions of the Council, which include advising the government on customary law, chieftaincy matters, cultural affairs, and broader policy issues that impact the traditional institution.

The newly inaugurated Council is the 12th since the creation of Ondo State in 1976, comprising a Chairman and all first-class monarchs, with interim representation for LGAs without a first-class Oba. The governor commended the immediate past Council, led by the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, for their selfless service and contributions to security and cultural continuity.

In his congratulatory message to the new Chairman, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, the Olowo of Owo, and other members, Aiyedatiwa described their appointment as “a call to higher service” and urged them to provide visionary leadership and unbiased counsel, especially on issues concerning community security, youth engagement, and cultural preservation.

“I expect a council that will continue to offer government wise and unbiased advice. Your collective wisdom is an invaluable asset that we must leverage for the advancement of our dear state,” the governor said.

Reiterating his administration’s commitment, he added, “Let me unequivocally state that our administration is fully committed to supporting our traditional institutions and advancing their cause… Your welfare and the dignity of your exalted offices will always be a priority for this government.”

In his response, Oba Ogunoye thanked the governor for the trust reposed in him and pledged to lead the Ondo State Council of Obas with fairness, integrity, and commitment to the progress of the state’s traditional institutions.

He also called on fellow monarchs to remain united, support the government’s development agenda, and continue to uphold the legacy and values of their forebears.
