Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, has reaffirmed that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo will harness the power of sports to promote unity, healthy living, and economic growth across Edo State.
Idahosa emphasised that sports are no longer just about competition but have become a powerful tool for community development, youth engagement, and improved physical and mental well-being.
This was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Friday Aghedo, and made available to journalists in Benin City on Saturday.
Speaking while leading thousands of sportsmen and women, including the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Desmond Enabulele, during the 2025 Olympic Day celebration themed “Let’s Move Together for Health and Community,” Idahosa highlighted the vital role sports play in modern society.
According to him, “Engaging in sports activities strengthens our mind and body, keeps our communities healthy, and inspires us to reach our full potential. Sporting activities bring joy, ignite dreams, and promote peace and unity among people of different backgrounds. Olympic Day reminds us of the true spirit of sports — it connects us, motivates us to stay active, and unites us under one banner of friendship and community, regardless of where we live or the sports we choose to play.”
Declaring the event open, Hon. Enabulele used the opportunity to announce plans for a proposed “Governor’s Fitness Day,” which will be held every third Saturday of the month to encourage Edo residents to embrace regular exercise, wellness, and social harmony.
He explained that the Governor’s Fitness Day will build on the Olympic Day model, adding that “Sports and fitness belong to everyone, no matter your age, background, or ethnic group. It is about staying healthy together and building stronger bonds through sports.”
Enabulele also praised the sponsors, partners, and star athletes who joined the Olympic Day Run, including Rachael Tonjor, a Nigerian swimmer who competed in the women’s 100m breaststroke at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and Isaac Ikhuoria, who won a bronze medal in boxing at the 1972 Olympics.
The 2025 Olympic Day celebration saw enthusiastic participants run through major streets in Benin City and finish at the iconic Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, further promoting Edo State as a hub for sports development, fitness awareness, and community spirit.
By prioritising sports development, the Edo State Government under Governor Okpebholo aims to unlock opportunities for youth empowerment, promote healthy lifestyles, and strengthen unity among all ethnic groups in the state.
