The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Asue Akintunde Ighodalo, over the outcome of the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State.

The electoral umpire, INEC declared Senator Monday Okpebholo, the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC as winner.

The apex court made this decision, Wednesday after hearing arguments for and against the appeal.

In the appeal Igbodalo is challenging the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The appeal was heard by a five-member panel of justices led by Justice Garba Lawal.

Ighodalo’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Ken Mozia, asked the court to overturn the judgments of the Election tribunal and the appeals court, which upheld INEC’s declaration.

On May 29, 2025, the Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed the ruling of the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

Both courts dismissed Ighodalo’s petition, describing it as lacking merit.
